A U.N. refugee agency driver has been shot dead in southern Chad, the agency said Friday.
Mahmat Mahamadou, a Chadian who worked as a driver for the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in the southern town of Danamadji, was killed Thursday as he was returning home through an area normally considered safe, the agency said.
"We are shocked and saddened by the killing," UNHCR spokesman William Spindler told reporters in Geneva, adding that the agency was still trying to find out why its staff member had been killed and by whom.
