HOUSE GOP POSTPONES VOTE ON HEAD START BILL.(MAIN)

WASHINGTON -- Facing a possible defeat in the House of Representatives, Republicans on Thursday postponed a vote on a bill to redesign Head Start, the popular preschool program for children in poverty.

Key Republicans said the delay on the controversial bill was due to scheduling difficulties and a low turnout expected today among Republicans. They vowed to bring the bill back for a vote next week, when more members would be available to vote. The 38-year-old Head Start program, which provides an array of nutritional, medical and social services to 900,000 children in poverty, is facing an unexpectedly bitter fight over its renewal by Congress this year.
