Fed: Democrats call for compensation for Iraqi refugees
The Australian Democrats have called on the government to pay compensation to Iraqirefugees for their detention in Australia.
Democrats Leader ANDREW BARTLETT says the government should pay compensation for theillness these already damaged people have suffered because of their treatment in Australia.
The Democrats have also demanded a guarantee that no Iraqi refugees in Australia wouldbe forcibly returned to post-SADDAM HUSSEIN Iraq.
Australia's urged Syria and Iran to cooperate with US-led efforts to find and destroyany Iraqi chemical or biological weapons.
US President GEORGE W BUSH has accused Syria of possessing chemical weapons and alsowarned Damascus not to allow any senior Iraqi leaders to escape into Syrian territoryin an effort to flee coalition forces.
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says Australia's aware of intelligence reports thatIraqi weapons, including chemical weapons, may have been moved into Syria.
