Tas: Australia's oldest WWI veteran dies, aged 107 =2
RSL National President Major General Peter Phillips said Mr MacDonald's contributionas a young soldier had been great, fighting in both world wars.
"I think all Australians should mourn his passing, (he was) a great Australian," hetold Sky News.
"We will remember him of course as one of our last serving veterans of World War I... but he certainly, as I say, would be remembered in his own right for his contributionas a young soldier."
Major Phillips said he last saw Mr MacDonald at the state funeral of Alec Campbell.
"He was certainly very frail but still pretty feisty, and just a lovely chap to talkto," he said.
Major Phillips said he understood the Tasmanian government would hold a state funeralfor Mr MacDonald, probably towards the end of this week.
